The working system

Bento is a self-hosted web application for personal and small-team file storage. It is designed for people who want to keep files on storage they operate, with a browser interface for everyday file management.

A closer look at the product is coming soon.

What it does

Development covers file and folder browsing, chunked uploads, downloads, search, and share links. Access permissions, trash management, and storage administration are part of the same project, so managing files and maintaining the storage can be considered together.

Operating model

Bento runs on a server managed by its operator. The operator chooses the storage and manages access, updates, and backups. A maintenance read-only mode is included in the design to pause file changes during storage work; normal use includes uploading and managing files.

Evidence flow

The public repository includes API contracts, test cases, and scripts for checking changes. The development approach connects small changes with repeatable checks, with AI-assisted maintenance described as support for a human maintainer's review and release decisions.

Verified scope

Bento is publicly available under the MIT License and remains in early development. The v0.1.0 release marks an open-source readiness baseline, bringing together the source, contribution guidance, and maintenance documentation. It is not presented as a finished hosted storage service.

Where it stops

File handling, access control, and storage maintenance are still being refined. To explore the current version, start with the setup guide in the GitHub repository and test files. Keep independent backups while evaluating the software.
